On Wednesday morning, ten students presented their business ideas after completing an eight-week course. Three of these students were fortunate enough to receive seed money to kickstart their ventures. Vamsi Jupudi, Kameryn Mitchell, and Jamarion Willie Hughes each walked away with this crucial financial support.

Event Highlights and Sponsorship

This significant event was sponsored by the Regions Foundation and took place at the IDEA Bank. The students showcased their ideas to a panel of judges, forming just a part of the “TROY Starters: Idea Accelerators powered by Regions Foundation” program. This comprehensive program encompasses three different accelerator programs hosted by the IDEA Bank.

Goal of the Event

The main objective of this event, as stated by Lynne George, the director of the IDEA Bank, was to assist students in learning how to create a business plan and deliver a pitch. It provided them with a safe environment to experiment and boost their confidence. George observed that the students had progressed from having broad concepts to developing a refined business plan.“Anyone can have an idea, but it is the dedication to refining that idea and the commitment to continuous learning that distinguishes successful entrepreneurs from the rest,” she emphasized.

Grand Prize Winner and Plans

Jupudi emerged as the grand prize winner, receiving ,000 after pitching BrightLyf, an innovative AI-powered mental health platform.“This victory not only validates the significance of our work but also motivates us to further enhance ourselves,” Jupudi expressed. “We intend to utilize the seed money to officially register the company and initiate a pilot program right here at Troy University. Before the program, we merely had an idea; now, we know how to transform it into a viable business. It taught us how to raise funds and make wiser business decisions. Most importantly, it facilitated our connection with key individuals at the university, who will be invaluable partners as we move forward.”

Learning Opportunities for Students

Students gained valuable insights into the intricacies of starting a business and identifying their target market. Savannah Burg, a junior global management major from Livingston, shared, “I learned a great deal about the marketing mix and how to determine the market’s need for my services. This experience has equipped me with the necessary steps to commence my business.”

Transferable Skills and Future Prospects

Although only three students won seed money, George emphasized that the skills acquired through the pitching process would benefit students regardless of their future paths.“Pitching is a skill that can be applied in various fields,” George stated. “Even if these students don't pursue starting a business, they had the courage to stand in front of a panel of judges and a group of people, which is no small feat. Practicing public speaking leads to the development of numerous transferable skills such as enhanced confidence, professionalism, organization, and networking. These skills can be utilized in any endeavor.”The Regions Foundation funded the entire program, and Market Executive John Brown announced that another event will be held in spring 2025, offering approximately ,000 in seed money. This event is set to conclude the TROY Starters: Idea Accelerators program.
